Liebe Gefährtinnen und Gefährten auf dem Weg,
wäre die Welt flach und eckig, dann würden wir vielleicht ein anderes Gespräch führen.
Dann könnten wir vielleicht von einem “Mittelpunkt der Welt” und von den “Ecken der Welt” sprechen. Aber die Realität ist, dass die Erde kugelförmig ist. Auf der Oberfläche einer Kugel ist der Mittelpunkt überall.
Wann immer eine bestimmte Nation, Ethnie oder Religion ihre Vorherrschaft verkündet, ist ein Rund-Erdler verpflichtet, die Subjektivität dieser Behauptung zu erkennen.
Natürlich kann es liebenswert sein, wenn die Anhänger des einen oder anderen Identitätsblocks ihre Begeisterung für das Projekt ihrer Wahl zum Ausdruck bringen. Voller Sympathie fühlt man sich bewegt, an ihrer Freude teilzuhaben. Der Charme verschwindet allerdings schnell, wenn die Selbstliebe in Hass auf andere umschlägt.
Oder sogar in Gleichgültigkeit anderen gegenüber. Manchmal ist Hass der Grund, wenn Kinder und andere Nichtkämpfende zu Tausenden getötet werden. Andere Male scheint der Grund einfach Gleichgültigkeit zu sein – die Haltung, dass nur das eigene Volk zählt und die Tragödien der anderen als Kollateralschaden abgetan werden können.
Aber die Welt ist kein flacher Platz, sie ist eine Kugel und der Mittelpunkt ist überall. Wenn es einen bestimmten Mittelpunkt gibt, dann muss er dort sein, wo der größte Schmerz ist – denn wir wissen, dass Gott der Barmherzigste und Mitfühlendste ist.
Heute ist Gaza das Epizentrum menschlichen Leids, wo sehr viele Zivilisten getötet wurden, humanitäre Hilfe einer Blockade unterliegt und Luftangriffe weiterhin Blutbäder anrichten. Die Ukraine, die Demokratische Republik Kongo, Myanmar, der Sudan, Süd-Sudan und Ost-Turkestan sind gleichermaßen große Schmerzpunkte.
Dies kann nicht so weitergehen. Lasst uns dafür beten und arbeiten – nicht nur für Waffenstillstand an allen Fronten, sondern auch für eine weltweite Bewegung für Wahrheit und Versöhnung, wo auch immer systemische Diskriminierung, Beschlagnahmung von Eigentum, ungerechtfertigte Inhaftierung, Folter, Terrorismus und schweres militärisches Vorgehen das Gefüge der menschlichen Gemeinschaft zerrissen haben.
Die Form des Planeten ist ein klares Zeichen. Auf dieser runden Erde ist das Wohlergehen eines jeden genauso wichtig wie unser eigenes.

Dear Companions on the Path,
If the world were flat and square we might be having a different conversation.
Then perhaps we could speak of a “center of the world” and “corners of the world.” But the reality is, the Earth is spherical. On the surface of a sphere, the center is everywhere.
Whenever a particular nation, race, or religion proclaims its paramountcy, a round-Earther is bound to recognize the subjectivity of the claim.
Of course, it can be endearing to hear partisans of one or another identity bloc express their enthusiasm for their chosen project. In a spirit of sympathetic joy, one is moved to share in their delight. The charm quickly dwindles, however, when self-love veers into other-hate.
Or even other-apathy. Sometimes when children and other non-combatants are killed in the thousands, the reason is hate. Other times the reason seems simply to be apathy—the attitude that only one’s own people matter, and others’ tragedies can be brushed off as collateral damage.
But the world isn’t a flat square, it is a sphere, and the center is everywhere. If there is a special center, since we know that God is the Most Merciful and Compassionate it must be where the greatest pain is.
Today the epicenter of human pain is Gaza, where large numbers of civilians have been killed, humanitarian aid is subject to a blockade, and airstrikes continue to wreak carnage. Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Myanmar, Sudan, South Sudan, and East Turkestan are major pain points as well.
This cannot continue. Let us pray, and work, not only for ceasefires on all fronts, but also for a global movement for truth and reconciliation wherever systemic discrimination, seizure of property, unjust detention, torture, terrorism, and heavy-handed militarism have shredded the fabric of the human community.
The planet’s shape is a clear sign. On this round Earth, everyone’s well being is as important as our own.
