Liebe Weggefährtinnen und Weggefährten,
ich grüße Sie herzlich zum Herbstanfang! Mögen diese Zeilen Sie bei guter Gesundheit
finden.
Nächsten Monat veröffentlicht Shambhala die neue Ausgabe von Murshids The Mysticism of
Sound and Music. Unter den vielen Sätzen, die einem aus diesem zeitlosem Buch
entgegenspringen, ist dieser: "Eines Tages wird Musik das Mittel sein, um die
universale Religion auszudrücken."
Was hat Murshid damit gemeint?
Musik spielt eine wichtige Rolle in den Ritualen fast aller großen spirituellen
Traditionen der Welt. Innerhalb der islamischen Zivilisation hat die Musik sowohl ihre
Gegner als auch ihre Befürworter gehabt. Zu den letzteren gehörte al-Ghazali, der
erklärte, dass ein Verbot von Musik so wenig sinnvoll sei wie das Verbot von Nachtigallen.
Die Sufis von Chisht gingen noch weiter und behaupteten: "Es gibt Entdeckungen im
musikalischen Vortrag, die in hundert Jahren des kanonischen Gottesdienstes nicht zu
finden sind."
Musik ist die siebte Aktivität der Inayatiyya, und ich bin immer wieder beeindruckt von
der Art und Weise, wie Musik den Tenor unserer Zusammenkünfte erhebt. In diesem Sommer in
der Türkei hörten wir voller Freude zu, als ein Musikensemble von Murids Lieder auf
Türkisch, Arabisch und Hindi vortrug. Sie spielten sogar Melodien, die Ravan komponiert
hatte, und das, nachdem wir sie nur ein- oder zweimal gehört hatten! In der Schweiz wurden
wir von der Ney und der Bansuri von Sinan Arat, dem Gesang von Ruhiya (deren wunderbare
Evokation des philippinischen Geistes, Ginhawa, gerade veröffentlicht wurde), dem
indischen Sophic Zikr von Fereshta Bechtloff und Ravans Ilahis auf Tar und Rawap
mitgerissen.
John Coltrane soll von Murshids The Mysticism of Sound and Music inspiriert gewesen sein.
In der afrikanisch-orthodoxen Kirche Saint John Coltranein San Francisco wird im
wöchentlichen Sonntagsgottesdienst die saxophonische Interpretation von 'ishq, A Love
Supreme, gespielt. Ich plane, die Coltrane-Kirche im November zu besuchen, wenn ich die
Bay Area für The Journey of the Soul besuche. Freunde an der Westküste der USA, ich freue
mich darauf, Sie dann zu sehen. In der darauf folgenden Woche werde ich, so Gott will,
zusammen mit dem Biographen von John Coltrane und den Gründern der Coltrane Church an
einem Online-Dialog für Coltrane & the Mysticism of Sound teilnehmen.
Als Murshid von Musik als Ausdruck universeller Religion sprach, dachte er da an die
transformative Kraft ekstatischer Stücke wie A Love Supreme, Bachs h-Moll-Messe und die
hochfliegenden Ragas von Narada, Tumburu und Tansen? Ich glaube schon - und ich glaube, er
hatte auch noch etwas anderes im Kopf.
Was war dieses andere? Er brachte es auf den Punkt, als er sagte: "Jede Religion
schlägt einen Ton an, einen Ton, der den Bedürfnissen der Menschheit in einer bestimmten
Epoche entspricht. Doch die Quelle jeder Note ist dieselbe Musik, die sich manifestiert,
wenn die Noten harmonisch zusammengefügt sind. All die verschiedenen Religionen sind die
verschiedenen Töne, und wenn sie auf diese Weise zusammengefügt werden, ergeben sie
Musik".
In wenigen Tagen werden wir in Richmond und online die Symphonie der Botschaft im Rahmen
einer interreligiösen Konvokation erforschen. Die Leitung des Universal Worship, das
Astana und die örtlichen Geistlichen haben zusammengearbeitet, um diese besondere
Zusammenkunft zu ermöglichen. Ich freue mich auf eine einzigartige Erfahrung, ein
kontemplatives Gespräch, das in der Geschichte Richmonds verwurzelt ist und dessen
fruchtbare, visionäre Zweige sich in viele Richtungen ausbreiten. Ich hoffe, dass Sie sich
uns anschließen werden.
Es gibt vieles in der Welt, das uns Sorgen macht und traurig stimmt. Der Krieg in der
Ukraine geht weiter, ebenso wie bewaffnete Konflikte und systemische Ungerechtigkeiten an
vielen Orten. Inzwischen sind die Zeichen des Fiebers unseres Planeten überall zu sehen.
Während ich schreibe, steht ein Drittel des Landes Pakistan unter Wasser, eine
unglaubliche humanitäre Katastrophe. Es ist nicht zu leugnen: Das Lied unserer Spezies
gerät in Rhythmus und Ton ins Stolpern, und das schon seit geraumer Zeit. Die einzig
mögliche Lösung ist eine musikalische. Es ist an der Zeit, uns in Einklang zu bringen -
mit uns selbst, miteinander, mit der Erde und vor allem mit der Musik des unendlichen
Wortes des Einen.

Equinoctial greetings! May these lines find you well.
Next month Shambhala releases its new edition of Murshid’s The Mysticism of Sound and
Music. Among the many sentences that leap off the page of that timeless book is this one:
“Some day music will be the means of expressing universal religion.”
What did Murshid mean by this?
Music plays an important role in the rituals of nearly all of the world’s great spiritual
traditions. Within the civilization of Islam, music has had both its detractors and its
champions. Among the latter was al-Ghazali, who famously declared that banning music made
as little sense as censoring nightingales. The Sufis of Chisht went further, asserting
that, “There are discoveries in musical audition not to be found in a hundred years of
canonical worship.”
Music is the seventh Activity of the Inayatiyya, and I am always struck by the way in
which music elevates the tenor of our gatherings. This summer in Turkey we listened with
sheer elation as murids who have formed a musical ensemble offered songs in Turkish,
Arabic, and Hindi. They even played melodies that Ravan had composed, and that after only
hearing them once or twice! In Switzerland we were swept away by the ney and bansuri of

John Coltrane is said to have been inspired by Murshid’s The Mysticism of Sound and
Music. At the Saint John Coltrane African Orthodox Church in San Francisco, the weekly
Sunday service consists of listening to the artist’s saxophonic exploration of ‘ishq, A
Love Supreme. I plan to attend the Coltrane Church in November when visiting the Bay Area
for The Journey of the Soul

When Murshid spoke of music expressing universal religion, did he have in mind the
transformative power of ecstatic pieces like A Love Supreme, Bach’s B-Minor Mass, and the
soaring ragas of Narada, Tumburu, and Tansen? I think he did – and I think he had
something else in mind as well.
What was that something else? He spelled it out when he said, “Every religion strikes a
note, a note which answers the demand of humanity in a certain epoch. Yet the source of
every note is the same music which manifests when the notes are arranged harmoniously
together. All the different religions are the different notes, and when they are thus
arranged together they make music.”

The leadership of the Universal Worship, the Astana, and local clergy have worked together
to make this special gathering possible. I anticipate a unique experience, a contemplative
conversation rooted in the history of Richmond and with fruitful, visionary branches
spreading out in many directions. I hope you will join us.
There is much to worry and sadden us in the world. The war in the Ukraine continues, as
do armed conflicts and systemic injustices in many places. Meanwhile, the signs of our
planet’s fever are everywhere to be seen. As I write, a third of the country of Pakistan
is underwater, an incredible humanitarian disaster. There is no denying it: the song of
our species is faltering in rhythm and tone, and has been for some time. The only possible
solution is a musical one. It is time to harmonize – with ourselves, with each other, with
the Earth, and most essentially, with the music of the One’s endless Word.
